Bishopston Trading Company Applique Sponge Bag – Organic Cotton, Fair Trade
A 100% organic Fair Trade cotton fabric bag with a soft plastic waterproof lining, from K V Kuppam, India. The bag is secured with a cotton drawstring and has sequin butterfly applique designs on the front. Colours vary. 26 cm x 20 cm.
General Information:The administrative district of K V Kuppam in India is made up of several villages and is very rural – the only other employment in the area is subsistence farming. The cloth used to make these sponge bags is woven in K V Kuppam using traditional techniques on handlooms from organic cotton grown in Gujerat in India. All fabric has been pre–shrunk by leaving to dry in sunshine. Only non azo dyes and non chlorine bleaches have been used during manufacture. Any imperfections are part of the character of the cloth and will not affect its strength.

There is a long tradition of hand–weaving in the area and Bishopston Trading are now able to employ up to 300 weavers. All fabric has been pre–shrunk by leaving to dry in the Indian sunshine. The bags are made by the K V Kuppam Tailoring Societies, which employ tailors, cutters and hand–finishers to turn the cotton into the finished articles. The tailors are paid above average wages and are provided with full and secure employment all year round. They also have a provident fund, retirement gratuity, sickness benefit and access to health care. Many of the tailors and hand finishers are women – as their earnings are equal to the men their income allows them to provide for their families.
